Defining Unity
Unity occurs when the different design elements work together, making the composition feel cohesive. It brings order to the piece, allowing the viewers to see it as a whole rather than a collection of individual parts (BBC, 2025)
Components
Alignment: Positioning design elements along a shared axis. Once the elements are lined up, they visually connect and follow a logical flow. Elements are arranged so that their edge is lined up. (Allan, n.d.)
Proximity: Corresponds with repetition and also contributes to unity. When elements are placed near each other, users understand they are related or share something in common (Allan, n.d.).
Repetition: Elements that are grouped by similarity. It helps users recognize their meaning each time they encounter them, making it easier to process information. Creating consistent design elements is especially important when those elements are connected.
