Color, line, shape, space, and texture are the primary visual elements.
- As a visual attribute, COLOR is generated from light reflection or emission and encompasses primary, secondary, warm, cool, and neutral colors, each representing the emotional tone of the piece (Hilldale Public Schools, n.d.).
- LINES are marks of varying width, direction, and length made with drawing tools. The marks or figures generated could convey emotions of happiness, sadness, etc. The marks also guide the viewer in discerning or understanding the drawing's meaning (The Elements of Art: Line, n.d.; Understanding Formal Analysis, n.d.)..
- SHAPE emerges when lines connect to form a closed space or those with minimal gaps. The formation of two lines, whether connected or not, could enable the brain to perceive forms similar to those observed in the environment (Shape Grade 3 – Geometric vs. Organic Shapes, 2018)..
- SPACES are areas around and within shapes, objects, or compositions. The perception of space as positive, negative, shallow, or deep influences how individuals view art (Cary High Visual Art - Unit 2: Shape, Form, Space, n.d.).
- TEXTURE demonstrates relationships between and among objects, elements (e.g., colors), and surfaces. Texture makes us feel or see something based on appearance, which plays a crucial role in establishing relationships with the things that surround us (Texture – How It Feels – New Life Photos, 2022). Together, these elements form the foundation of visual arts, enhancing creation and appreciation.
