Artificial Intelligence Literacy

Guide to Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy and AI use in research.

AI for Teaching and Learning

Educators can use AI to help build a toolkit for the classroom. Some of the possibilities are listed below:

  • Content Creation
    • Assist in creating educational materials such as syllabi, presentations, lesson plans, and quizzes.
  • Assignment Design
    • Brainstorm ideas for student assignments, research papers, and classroom discussions.
  • Content Recommendation
    • Recommend relevant readings and learning materials such as books, articles, and multimedia resources.
  • Accessibility and Language Support
    • Overcome language barriers, transcribe spoken words into text, provide image descriptions, and otherwise support students with disabilities.

AI Detection

As a student, keep in mind that use of AI may not be allowed. See AI and Academic Integrity. Tools exist that can check for potential AI use in class assignments, though they are not 100% accurate. A list of some of these tools are below. It is important to keep in mind that problems exist in these detection methods, including:

  • False positives and negatives may happen
  • They do not provide an explanation for why something was tagged.
  • There are methods to evade detection.
  • Bias against non-native English speakers.

It is a good idea to for teachers to have a clear, explicit guideline on AI use in coursework, and students are encouraged to always cite AI use.
