Collections Evaluation

How to make recommendations

To review the recommendations that subject librarians have made, click on the 'UWG Collection Evaluation recommendations" link for each subclass. This will take you to a google spreadsheet of items for that subclass that are being considered for removal.

You have commenting privileges on this spreadsheet. Add your name in the 'faculty recommendation' column next to an item recommended for discard that you'd like the library to keep in our collection.

While we recognize that many of us feel a negative emotional response to the thought of discarding books or a positive attachment to certain titles, we ask that you keep a few questions in mind when reviewing the lists:

  1. Would you want a student to cite this in a research assignment in your courses? For example, if you require students to use sources that are no more than 10 years old, when would you expect students to use this 20 year old book?
  2. Would you want a student to rely on this information without proper contextualization? For example, some materials may include racist information that could be harmful if not placed into appropriate historical context. Some psychological or medical texts may include outdated diagnosis or treatment information which could do more harm than good.
  3. If this is a classic in your field, why has it not been checked out in 15 or more years? What curricular decisions have led to this item not being used, and is that something you see changing in the future?

As much as we would love to keep all of the books, students regularly report believing that our decision to hold a book in our library is an endorsement of its quality. Therefore, we have a responsibility to ensure that our books contain quality information that is relevant to the current UWG curriculum. Since we have limited space in the library, we must remove outdated and unused items to make room for more relevant materials.

Email your department's subject librarian if you have any questions.

Items that have not been checked out since 2005

This list includes columns for the number of times it has been checked out by UWG users and via GIL Express or Interlibrary Loan (external loans). The catalog does not distinguish last loan date by type of loan. In some cases, the book has never once been checked out by a member of the UWG community. This list is sorted by call number, which keeps similar topics together. Please complete your recommendations on this list by  October 15, 2022.
