GALILEO: Find articles and evaluate sources

1. Students will learn how to apply filters to limit searches to find different kinds of resources in GALILEO.

2. Students will apply evaluation criteria to sources found in GALILEO

How to start a research project

1. Students will develop topics and identify resources for a research project.

2. Students will create an action plan for a significant research project.

How to do a literature review

1. Students will explain the process of writing a literature review.

2. Students will create a plan for using library resources to do a literature review.

How to read a scholarly article

1. Students will identify parts of a scholarly article.

2. Students will describe how scholarly articles are used in research and writing projects.  

Decoding a bibliography

1. Students will read citations to determine the type of source cited.

 2. Students will identify where to look to find the full-text of each type of source.

Keeping track of your sources: how to organize your research

1. Students will explore ways of organizing sources for a research project.

2. Students will describe how citation management software could be used in their research projects.

How to use an academic book

1. Students will identify elements of academic books.

2. Students will explain how the front matter in a book can reveal the author's agenda and bias.  

Using Mendeley to organize your research (ONLINE only; 90 minutes

1. Students will create a library of sources in Mendeley.

2. Students will generate citations in Word using Mendeley's plug-in.  

When and how to just "Google it"

1. Students will be able to use internet search engines to find background information and links to scholarly sources.

2. Students will be able to evaluate when a website/web-resource is appropriate for academic research.

Cited Reference Searching with Web of Science

1. Students will describe the value of cited reference searching for their research projects.

2. Students will use Web of Science to find sources that cite a given source.

Research Review

1. Students will identify gaps in the research they have done on a specific topic.

2. Students will create a plan for completing their research project.

Citation mining: using one article to find many more

1. Students will discover relevant resources using references or citations .

2. Students will evaluate the research impact of a work.

Examining the politics of Google

1. Students will identify ways Google search results can be problematic.

2. Students will describe how much data Google collects and sells about its users.
Primary source research in Special Collections

1. Students will explain what primary sources are in different disciplines.

2. Students will describe how to incorporate primary sources into their research processes and products.
