In many databases you'll see links to references cited in or by an article. What's the difference?
Cited references ("cited in") are sources referenced by a paper. These sources are always listed at the end of a peer-reviewed article. Refer to cited references for background information on an article's methods or research.
Citing references ("cited by") are sources that reference a paper, i.e., their authors used the paper for their research. To find citing references, you must consult a database; they are not listed in the article. Citing references show how an idea or topic has developed over time.
