Web of Science (AKA Web of Knowledge), a users' guide

A guide to help you use the Web of Knowledge database

Introduction

This guide is to help you use Web of Science.

Web of Science, AKA Web of Knowledge, is a database for researching Arts & Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. You will find it linked off of the list of databases. If you are off-campus, you will need to use the current GALILEO password (posted in CourseDen) to access this resource.

Web of Science contains the following Citation Indexes:

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index, 1975-present
  • Science Citation Index, 1900-present
  • Social Sciences Citation Index, 1900-present
  • Book Citation Index - Science (BKCI-S), 2005-present
  • Book Citation Index - Social Sciences & Humanities (BKCI-SSH), 2005-present
  • Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), 2015-present

What is Cited Reference Searching?

Cited reference searching allows you to see who cited a published book or article. Looking at footnotes, you can follow research backwards in time to see what sources your article used. Cited reference searching allows you to take research forwards by seeing who else cited the article you are using. You can look at the other citations those articles used and build a web of citations and sources useful for your research.

Web of Knowledge is not a full-text database. Use the  button to see to which journals UWG has access or to initiate an ILLiad request.
