Essentially, ASL tracks down the right holders using the databases provided by the PPOs and other sources and serves as a go-between by collecting the royalties and securing the licenses on the cover artist's behalf. This saves music users from hunting various places to find out which licensing agency is the licenser for a particular song. Note that this agency may not secure synchronization licenses when cover songs or other copyrighted music is used to accompany video.

A non-profit public rights organization (PRO in USA), ASCAP, which stands for American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, licenses over 20 million songs. Use the Repertory (song database) to search by song title, artist, publisher or other details to determine whether ASCAP licenses the particular song one wishes to use.

Broadcast Music, Inc is a PRO (Performing Rights Organization) that manages the licenses and collects fees for over 22.4 million Musical works.

Harry Fox may be able to make the arrangements for synch licenses for songs in its catalog.

SESAC (along with BMI and ASCAP) is one of the three Performing Rights Organizations recognized by the US Copyright office. It manages the rights for over 1.5 million songs.
