MLA Citations, 3rd Edition

As of April 2009, the Modern Language Association instituted the seventh edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers detailing new changes in the MLA style format.

Citations: Include in the text of your paper at the end of each sentence that uses a fact from a source, as (author page#). 

e.g. This is a sentence with a fact (Cook 1).

Bibliography: List all sources in your paper in the bibliography.

Book:
Author's last name, first name. Title. Publication Place: Publisher, Publication Year. Publication Medium (print, online, DVD, TV, etc).

e.g. Carré, John le. The Tailor of Panama. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1996. Print.

Periodical:
Author's last name, first name. "Article Title." Journal Title volume#.issue# (Publication Date): Page#. Medium.

e.g. Aldrich, Frederick A. and Margueritte L. Marks. “Wyman Reed Green, American Biologist.” Bios 23.1 (1952): 26-35. Print.

Online Periodical:
Author's last name, first name. "Article Title."  Journal Title. Publisher, Publication Date. Medium. Access Date (since online).

e.g. Lubell, Sam. “Of the Sea and Air and Sky.” New York Times. New York Times, 26 Nov. 2008. Web. 1 Dec. 2008.

Website:
Author's last name, first name. "Page Title."  Website Title. Publisher, Publication Date. Medium. Access Date (since online).
[Note: The latest edition of the MLA style guide does not require a URL, but it can be included to make the site easier to find.]
e.g. Cook, Jean. "MLA Citation Guide." Univ. of West Georgia Libraries. Univ. of West Georgia, 1 Jun. 2009. Web. 12 Jun. 2009.
