Ingram Library's Penelope Melson Society 

Born in 1879, "Nep" Stevens came from a family that valued education. She married John Holland Melson, who assumed the position of principal of the new Fourth District Agricultural & Mechanical School in Carrollton, Georgia in 1907. In January, 1908, the couple hosted a community book shower, which established the first library collection for the school. Mrs. Melson voluteered as the institution's librarian from 1908 until 1920. After the family moved to Hogansville, Georgia in 1920, Nep Melson remained a community leader who secured educational and training opportunities for the less fortunate. She died in 1969. Penelope Stevens Melson’s commitment to enhancing the life of her community provides inspiration for the future development of the library she founded.
